Backpacking Must See & Do
Wildlife experiences
Kangaroo Island is the best place to see a huge range of land and sea-based native animals. It's Australia's answer to the Galapagos Islands. You can see koalas, kangaroos (unique species to the island), echidnas, sea-lions, wallabies, goannas, penguins, New Zealand fur seals and more.
Closer to Adelaide, you can interact with wildlife at Monarto Zoological Park, Cleland Wildlife Park and a host of other places around South Australia. Swim with dolphins at Glenelg, only 20 minutes from city centre. You can also swim with sea-lions and dolphins at Baird Bay, or simply walk alongside a wild sea-lion colony on Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island.
Wine and Food
Enjoy Adelaide's internationally renowned wining and dining opportunities as well as wine tasting in world famous wine regions such as Barossa, Clare Valley and Coonawarra. Of course, vineyards can also be great for seasonal grape picking work!
Outback
Stay in an underground hotel in the Outback opal mining town of Coober Pedy. While you're there, join the Outback Mail Run and be postman for a day, delivering mail to Outback stations. Visit authentic Aussie pubs along the way.
See magnificent Wilpena Pound, offering you cycling tours, bush walking, 4WD tours, Aboriginal rock art, abundant wildlife and variety of accommodation options including camping and station stays.
Pristine beaches and rugged coastline
While you're here, you can enjoy 30 kilometres of unbroken Adelaide metropolitan coastline. Or tackle the secluded surf beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula or the highly acclaimed Cactus Beach on the Eyre Peninsula.
Festival and events
Go to one of Adelaide's world renowned arts festival such as WOMADelaide - a major world music celebration - or one of the comedy acts at the Adelaide Fringe, one of Australia's biggest arts festivals.
