River for Families
South Australia offers plenty of Murray River fun for all the family. Learn to ski or wakeboard with one of the many ski schools in the Riverland. If your family is already up and away, most towns provide for water-skiing and other water sports with boat ramps and riverside reserves offering facilities.
For a short Murray River cruise with the children, try these options:
- The restored paddle-steamer PS Marion, at the Mannum Dock Museum
- The historic paddle-steamer PS Industry, from Renmark once a month
- The River Rambler at Renmark
- MV Water Rat outside Waikerie, offered by Bush Safari Co
- Jester Cruises in Mannum and Murray Bridge
- Murray River Queen for an afternoon or sunset cruise
Houseboating on the Murray River is a great family holiday. Relish the freedom to do as much or as little as you like. Houseboats cater for two to 12 people and you don't need a special license - just a valid driver's licence.
Or you can paddle a canoe through South Australia's quiet backwaters, water ski, swim and fish, or sprawl out with a good book on the banks. Look up Riverland Leisure Canoes for a fun family tour of fascinating river backwaters.
And nothing beats the fun and excitement of setting up camp along the river where there are plenty of campsites to choose from. The Department of Environment and Heritage manage these campsites and you can contact them for more information, including camp permits. Read more at our Park Accommodation and Camping pages.
