When rain hits, the Flinders Ranges and Outback comes to life, boasting stunning native plants indigenous to the area.Wildflowers, Flinders Ranges & Outback, South Australia

Don't miss this sight during your Flinders Ranges driving holiday.

Though the country is rugged, you don't need a four wheel drive to see the highlights. At this time of year, it's all about enjoying clear blue skies, burnt orange rockfaces and bursts of colourful wattles and flowers.

Port Augusta is home to the award winning Arid Lands Botanic Garden, with 12 kilometres of walking tracks for you to follow, plus a stunning collection of Australian arid plants. Come for morning tea and stay for lunch.

While in Port Augusta, also take a tour on Flinders Water Cruises and learn about the sensitive mangrove swamps at the tip of Spencer Gulf, guided by a passionate local.

Travel north to Parachilna, on the doorstep of the unforgettable Flinders Ranges National Park where you can spot emus and active wallabies. Take a tour with one of many 4WD operators, including Rawnsley Park Station and Wilpena Pound Resort, both offering breakfast and wildlife interpretation. A scenic flight over Flinders Ranges National Park will cover the icons in grand style - Wilpena Pound, the ABC and Chase ranges and salt Lake Frome.

At Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary you might see the painted dragon, or the rare Balcanoona Wattle. Do a Bats n Bubbly tour as the night settles and have drink watching the dusky colours on the spectacular desert-mountain ranges.

Off National Highway 1, Roxby Downs is home to large groups of brilliant red sturt desert peas, seen sprouting in sand dunes just south of the township.

Travel up to iconic Coober Pedy and see the colour in opal and the local characters. Stay underground and do the Mail Run Tour delivering mail to iconic outback towns, William Creek and Oodnadatta. Along the roadside you can see mulga trees in flower colours of purple, white and yellow wattles.
