Loy Krathong Festival- Thai Festival of Light
Loy Krathong, also known as Thai Festival of Lights is one of Thailand's most enchanting festival.
Thai people have long been closely involved with rivers, as Thailand is an agricultural country. To show respect to the river, people long ago decided to make Krathong’s in order to worship and ask for forgiveness to the goddess of the river called Pra Mae Khongkha. This soon became an annual tradition and later became a time to wave goodbye to misfortune, wash away sins of the past year, and make wishes for the coming year.
Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. This marks the date of the festival change every year. Usually it falls in the month of November.
