The Akurra Trail
Journey
The Akurra Trail
Flinders Ranges and Outback
The Akurra Trail explores the rich Adnyamathanha cultural history of Leigh Creek.
The trail begins in the township and visits the waters edge of Arrunha Awl (Aroona Dam) and loops around back into Leigh Creek Township.
Walking along you will see wildlife such as Warratyi (Emu), Urdlu (Kangaroo), Andu (Wallaby) and birdlife, including Yurlu (Kingfisher)
Arrunha Awl (Aroona Dam) is where two big Akurra (dreaming serpents), who created Ikara (Wilpena Pound) set out from on their southward journey.
The Akurra Trail is recommended to be walked with an Adnyamathanha Guide. Contact the Leigh Creek Visitor Information Outlet for more information
