Houseboats & cruises in the Riverland

Set your own pace – take a cruise down the Murray River on a houseboat, or hit the water in a canoe or kayak.

Houseboat holidays

Escape from the hustle-and-bustle of everyday life by floating down the Murray River – Australia’s longest river.

Take a leisurely cruise down the majestic river in a houseboat. Cook a barbecue as ochre-coloured cliffs, river red gums and abundant wildlife pass you by. A houseboat holiday is a perfect opportunity to spend time with family and friends, and escape from city life.

Dangle a line while you cruise. Swim off the deck, find a sheltered spot to stop for the night or pull ashore on a secluded sandy spot for a picnic.

Boats for all budgets

There are privately chartered houseboats to suit all tastes and budgets; some even have five-star ratings. Costs and availability vary according to the season, so make sure you book in advance.

Never hired a boat? No worries. A standard drivers’ licence is all you need to captain your own houseboat. You'll get full tuition before you depart, including information on river conditions, boating rules and mooring spots.

The Houseboat Hirers Association is a good place to start. It has a comprehensive list of options. Kayaks and canoes are also available to hire along the Murray River.

Go kayaking

Head out on the water in a kayak or canoe. To get a sense of the Murray River's diverse ecosystem, explore the river's backwater passages and wetlands. Go on a tour, hire or bring your own kayak or canoe.

Shorter cruises

Relax and enjoy the passing scenery and local commentary on-board a short river cruise. You can even dine in a cruising restaurant!

Murray River - float at your own pace

Drift along at your own pace on the Murray River. Get out on the water with Unforgettable Houseboats, drop in for a drink at Caudo Vineyards and Wilkadene Woolshed Brewery, or simply find a perch and watch the world flow by.
