Join poet Jill Jones in using your senses to expand your writing and engaging with 'mundane' objects to craft a meaningful narrative.

Poet William Carlos Williams’ famously wrote ‘No ideas but in things!’ reminding all writers, whether poets, fiction or nonfiction writers, to engage deeply with the world by focusing on the material, including objects and what they say about us and how we live in the world.

The workshop will ask writers to use all available senses to expand their writing and will offer ways of examining objects that writers might not have thought about previously, using various prompts and experiments.

Participants will be encouraged to deepen their writing through close observation and research, to focus big ideas through things in the world along with their connections to potential narratives, and to discover new ways to write about the familiar.

Jill Jones is a poet and teacher living on Kaurna land. Her latest book, Acrobat Music: New & Selected Poems was published in 2023. Her books have won the Mary Gilmore Award, the Kenneth Slessor Poetry Prize, the Wesley Michel Wright Prize, and the Victorian Premier’s Prize for Poetry, and have been shortlisted for other major prizes including the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.
