Miners Dugouts

Clare Valley

ATDW pixel
In 1851, around 2,000 miners and their families inhabited these dugouts along the riverbed. However, frequent floods compelled many to seek refuge in homes constructed by mining companies.

Despite meager wages, some miners opted to endure harsh living conditions, facing constant threats of floods and disease, rather than incur rental expenses. By 1860, the dugouts were mostly abandoned.

Access to the Miners’ Dugouts is granted with the Burra Heritage Passport, available from the Burra & Goyder Visitor Information Centre at 2 Market Square, Burra. The dugouts can be unlocked using the passport key, and are accessible during daylight hours.
