Magpie Springs Art Gallery exclusively showcases original paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photography by acclaimed South Australian tonal realist artist Avril Thomas. Situated on a boutique vineyard in the Adelaide Hills Wine Region on Willunga Hill in the Fleurieu Peninsula, the gallery offers a serene rural space dedicated to her tonal realist portraiture, figurative works, landscapes, abstracts, and more.Visitors explore exhibitions of archival-quality oil paintings, charcoal and graphite drawings, mixed media pieces, and other original artworks in a relaxed setting with vineyard views, gardens, and wildlife. Avril Thomas, an Archibald Prize finalist (2005 portrait of Alexander Downer), has works held in prestigious private and corporate collections across Australia, Hong Kong, and the USA, as well as in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Flinders University, Monash University, Deakin University, Adelaide University, and UniSA. She was the only Australian to win the Fine Art America global competition in 2022. The gallery complements the onsite cellar door, inviting guests to combine appreciation of fine art with discovery of boutique, estate-grown wines in peaceful surroundings—ideal for cultural day trips or inspiration. Prints of selected works are available online. Open Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, 11am–5pm. All welcome come immerse yourself in exceptional South Australian art.
