Castle Rock Walk and Lookout
Flinders Ranges and Outback
Free
This is the prominent rock formation located about two kilometers to the east of Hawker. As can be seen in the photos of this listing, late afternoon light provides an excellent photo, and it looks like a castle hence the name by which it has been known locally for decades.
The access to Castle Rock is via the original road to Wilpena Pound, travel out of Hawker for about 1km along the Wilpena road and turn right onto the unsealed road marked with the sign Desalination Plant. Avoid Yednalue Drive road because this road can become impassable during and after rain and can also have some stoney sections. A number of visitors have required towing when they have used this road.
Proceed on the dirt road to the top of the hill. The entrance is through the gate in the fence and follows the walking track, which leads towards Castle Rock. A great place to take in the view and for a photo in the early morning or evening for the best colour and light.
