Alexander Cameron (1810 - 1881), known widely as the King of Penola, is remembered as the district's first squatter and the town's founder. He arrived from Scotland in 1844, and his niece was Mary MacKillop. Cameron built the first shacks and the Royal Oak hotel in 1848. A life-size bronze statue commemorated Alexander Cameron by John Dowie, erected by public subscription on Church Street beside his Royal Oak Hotel.
