The Sluice Gate controlled the seawater flow into and out of the tidal cooling works pond used by the smelters. The saltwater was initially employed for cooling the ingots produced in the smelters, and later in the water-jacketed blast furnaces and to granulate the slag. The smelters operated continuously in Wallaroo from 1861 to 1923.
