Known for their eclectic taste and 5 million+ social media following, Josh & Matt are the LGBTQIA+ design duo who discovered just how welcoming South Australia is. Here's their guide to a weekend here.
We’re Josh & Matt — creators, designers and for those who know us, extreme homebodies who don’t often leave the house! So, when we do, it’s usually for good reason — like a trip to South Australia that surpassed all our expectations. We planned a weekend to explore the state, but we weren’t sure how far we would get with limited time. Now that we've visited, we’ve realised just how much you can cram into a couple of days. From our cozy Nest & Nature retreat — where we could look out and see a family of kangaroos grazing nearby — to an evening stroll through Adelaide Botanic Garden, admiring the most amazing glass sculptures, we've curated our very own guide to South Australia. It's full of personal recommendations and tips, so you can share in the magic of this place.
I can’t believe it happened, but we found a venue more eccentric than our own home! Josh & Matt

EOS by SkyCity
As a couple known across social media for our design and interior work, take our word – this is one of the most beautiful and spacious places to rest your head. I don't know about you, but when we first land in a new city, we make a beeline for the hotel so we can get our bearings and settle in. Eos by SkyCity could not have been a better spot to do exactly this. Positioned right in the middle of Adelaide, with views over the sparkling River Torrens and Adelaide Oval, you immediately get a feel for this boutique city. It’s one of the newest hotels in Adelaide, and dare we say, one of the best! From the moment we walked into the lobby, we were treated to a sparkling wine and impeccable service. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we saw the hotel room! Being designers, we are quick to assess the interiors of a space, and we are happy to say that Eos gets our stamp of approval. From the beautiful hardwood floors to the wood panelling and marble, the finishes made everything feel elevated – with a view to match. If you really care about your hotel experience when travelling, we highly recommend booking a weekend here.

Chihuly Nights
We kick-started our weekend in the city by strolling down North Terrace, admiring the stunning heritage facades. This terrace connects Eos by SkyCity to the East End precinct, where the Adelaide Botanic Garden can be found. While we always like to visit the botanic gardens of any city we go to, it quickly became a must thanks to the huge glass art sculptures dotting the grounds. Part of a long-term art installation by the world-famous Dale Chihuly, these glass sculptures come alive after sunset, illuminating the surrounding greenery. We are passionate about both gardening and art, so seeing the two merge before our eyes made the Chihuly Nights experience one of our favourites from the whole trip (open until 27 April 2025). Tip: You can take the tour at your own pace, but we suggest taking your time – you’d be surprised by just how much art has been installed across these sprawling gardens, popping up behind every bend in the path. You could easily take a couple of hours admiring it all. It’s a great activity to do on your own, as a couple, or with friends.

McLaren Vale
If you like wine you’ll love McLaren Vale, and if you don’t like wine — you’ll still love McLaren Vale! After spending a night in Adelaide, we decided to venture just 40 minutes out of the city to experience one of South Australia’s famous wine regions for ourselves. We started at Mitolo Wine, indulging in a superb Italian lunch and (of course) some drinks, overlooking an equally delectable vineyard scene. After lunch, we took some time to relax and admire the rolling green hills surrounding Mitolo, a glass of rosé in hand and a live DJ setting the tone. What we loved about McLaren Vale is that each winery has a personality — no two feel the same. Especially our favourite of the trip, the d’Arenberg Cube. I can’t believe it happened, but we found a venue more eccentric than our own home! There are multiple levels of art exhibit rooms to explore, with amazing 360-degree views of McLaren Vale. When you make it to the top of this Rubik’s Cube like structure, you’ll be treated to a wine tasting – making it an experience for every one of your senses. Art and wine are made to go hand in hand, so we had a ball! Tip: A word of advice from us: if you can, leave a whole day for McLaren Vale in your itinerary — there’s so much to explore here.

Nest & Nature
As much as we enjoy a holiday, we know that when you have limited time to experience a place, it can feel overwhelming trying to cram in as much as possible each day. That’s why booking a night at Nest & Nature was the perfect way to pace ourselves, allowing us time to recenter and recharge. From the comfort of our outdoor bathtub, a glass of local wine in hand, we watched as the sun slipped behind the hills that framed the horizon. Completely surrounded by bushland, we saw cute kangaroos grazing in the afternoon glow just metres from us. You feel completely removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, and all you can hear is nature’s soundtrack. I think we ended up birdwatching for a couple of hours; we were having the best time there. The cherry on top was the interiors — the room was beautiful and moody, from the wood everywhere to the natural-edge stone kitchen. It felt like an extension of the surrounding environment, at one with the landscape. We highly recommend this experience and can guarantee it’ll have you completely re-energised for your last few days, because damn, there’s a lot to do in South Australia. Tip: When travelling, it’s important to include places and experiences that heal and replenish the soul, and Nest & Nature truly did that for us. It’s also not so far from Adelaide or McLaren Vale that it feels out of the way on a shorter stay.

Food and Drink
Who doesn’t love food?! It’s a staple in any itinerary, and South Australia is the state for foodies. The only problem? We are indecisive. Which made it hard to narrow down the dining options, but hey, what a nice problem to have. A few of our personal highlights included Frankie Italo Dining. We had the share plate experience, which was a great way to try a big chunk of the menu — you’ll want to do this because everything tastes exceptional. Pearl at Aldinga Beach was another favourite — we enjoyed some of the best seafood we’ve ever had, and it tasted even sweeter knowing it’s all ethically sourced. We also ate at Longplay Bistro, which served flavourful, hearty meals, as well as mulled wine. These were just some of our personal picks, but the great thing about South Australia is that you really can’t go wrong when it comes to fine dining. There’s a myriad of choices and a wide spectrum of flavours to dive into. Tip: check out some of South Australia’s official guides and itineraries for all the best local dining recommendations.
With love, Josh & Matt
