The award-winning, critically acclaimed debut work from Beth Paterson and Kat Yates makes its return to Adelaide this February!
Following a sell-out season in Edinburgh Fringe, where the work received a prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award (joining the ranks of shows such as Fleabag and Baby Reindeer), Paterson's delicate portrait of her family's cultural legacy debuts at Adelaide Fringe's Courtyard of Curiosities for a strictly limited one-week season.
Weaving together memories, stories, and interviews to examine the precarity of identity, NIUSIA explores the artist's tenuous relationship to her late grandmother, the eponymous Holocaust survivor, Niusia. Having saved people's lives in the camps, fleeing with her family as refugees, and building a new, successful life in Australia, all Beth remembers about her grandmother is that she was a pretty mean lady.
Interrogating how all these things can be true at once, NIUSIA looks at the haphazard cultural legacy second, third, and fourth generation immigrants are handed, and asks 'what does remembrance look like when all we can remember is the space where questions should go?'.
