Known as 'the Songbird of Wassoulou', Grammy-award winning Oumou Sangaré is a global superstar and feminist icon. Singing in a style derived from the folk traditions of the rural southwestern part of Mali, Sangaré weaves blues, folk and rock into a rich tapestry of African rhythms. Using her music, lyrics and powerful voice to call out the abuses of her nation's patriarchal traditions, Sangaré has become the face of feminist struggle in her homeland. "I dared to tackle this subject first…" she says "and even risked my life doing it." Sangaré has performed at the Sydney Opera House, London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and Tokyo's Nippon Budokan; she was invited by Alicia Keys to sing a duet on TV; and has been sampled by Beyoncé. Sangaré's powerful presence, fierce spirit and soaring vocals, and the irresistibly danceable nature of Wassoulou music, make her live performances unforgettable.
