This iconic work in the history of post-modern dance is a fierce interplay of synchronisation and de-synchronisation. Four female dancers perform everyday movements, evoking familiar moments that have now mesmerised audiences around the world for more than four decades. Despite its long history, the piece remains strikingly contemporary —minimalist, physical and emotionally charged – and continues to be performed worldwide, even inspiring Beyoncé's 2011 Countdown video.
Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, hailed as 'the Queen of visionary rigour', made her international breakthrough with this seminal work in 1983. Ever since, Rosas has been a groundbreaking force in contemporary dance with works that explore how the body moves through space and time, as De Keersmaeker draws inspiration from geometry, numerical patterns and the natural world. The score, by Thierry de Mey and Peter Vermeersch, was created simultaneously with the choreography, imbuing the dancers with incredible energy.
