Leaving Adelaide we head north along Spencer Gulf through Port Wakefield to Port Augusta at the head of the Gulf then down the western side through Whyalla to Cowell, a town recognised for its Jade. An overnight stop in Tumby Bay provides a good departure point next day as we take the White River Road through Poonindie to Port Lincoln.
The scenic Whalers Way provides some spectacular coastline views, cliffs, blowholes, crevasses and beaches!
Drive through Coffin Bay National Park next day and taste of oysters, before heading up the West Coast to Elliston, The Talia Caves, Murphy's Haystacks and the Seal Colony at Point Labatt. Overnight at Streaky Bay then next day to Ceduna and an interesting detour to Cactus Beach and Fowlers Bay, rejoining the highway at Yalata. The Head of Bight Visitor Centre is a short distance further and is one of the best places to see the Southern Right Whales.
The coastline is spectacular, and we take time next morning to inspect the Bunda Cliffs before heading south to Penong and Ceduna via Denial Bay.
Our return is through Minnipa and the Gawler Ranges National Park to Iron Knob, Port Augusta and Melrose.
