The headstone marks the resting place of James (Scotty) Burnett, who tragically drowned while attempting to cross the River Light in August 1846.

James was a beloved figure in the District, known for traveling with his horse and cart to trade goods with station workers. He also served as a shepherd on Baker and Newland's station. His popularity and the respect he garnered led to the erection of his tombstone and fence by the station workers. This memorial was initially established after a community appeal in 1885 and has been lovingly restored multiple times since.
