Overlooking the Spencer Gulf and City of Whyalla, Hummock Hill was the site of the first European settlement at the turn of the twentieth century. During World War Two it serviced as a gun battery and observation post, development of the lookout utilised the old gun emplacements that can still be seen today. It is an important Aboriginal site.

A one-way sealed road takes vehicles to the top of the hill.

Hummock Hill is also a part of the City Walk Centenary Trail.

City Walk Centenary Trail includes Hummock Hill lookout and all interpretive signs along the way.
