Event
Opal Evolution is a three-day cultural event held in the Andamooka Opal Fields, bringing together art, science, community and the unique landscape of outback South Australia.
Presented over the October long weekend, the event invites visitors to experience opal country through a program of immersive night-time events, creative installations, live music, workshops and storytelling.
Highlights include large-scale light and projection artworks across the mullock heaps, an illuminated parade featuring UV-reactive creatures inspired by opalised fossils, outdoor cinema, and stargazing experiences under some of Australia's darkest skies.
Visitors can explore local venues including underground galleries, opal showrooms, artist studios and the Andamooka Observatory, while meeting the people who live and work in the opal fields.
Opal Evolution encourages multi-night stays, with programming across the weekend and evening events designed to create a destination experience rather than a pass-through visit.
The event is part of South Australia's Nature Festival and celebrates the unique intersection of opal, deep time, science and community in one of Australia's most distinctive outback locations.
