Pichi Richi Explorer
Flinders Ranges and Outback
Discover Heritage, Scenery and Steam on the Pichi Richi Explorer
Imagine stepping aboard beautifully restored South Australian Railways carriages, some dating back to the 19th century, ready for a nostalgic steam-powered journey through the timeless Flinders Ranges. The Pichi Richi Explorer is a relaxed half-day trip that perfectly blends history, scenery and the warm hospitality of Pichi Richi Railway's passionate volunteers.
Departing from Quorn and traveling to Woolshed Flat (return), this picturesque journey takes you along the last operating section of the original Old Ghan line. As the steam locomotive gathers pace, the gentle rhythm of the carriages and the scent of coal and steam create a sense of stepping back into a slower, more elegant era of travel.
Along the way, volunteers share the stories of the railway, its construction and the people who shaped this remarkable route. The line winds through ancient ranges, deep rock cuttings, stone-walled embankments and historic bridges that reveal the rugged beauty of the region. Wildlife sightings and stunning photo opportunities.
At Woolshed Flat, take time to explore capture photos before the return journey to Quorn.
Perfect for families, couples and history lovers, offers a charming introduction to heritage rail travel.
