In the 1920's a series of Locks and weirs were installed along the River Murray. These structures were built to divert water to the emerging agriculture industry and also to improve navigation of boats along the river. There are six locks in the Riverland, In the Berri District there is Lock 4 on Nitschke Road just a few minutes out of Berri heading towards Loxton. The lock has free BBQ's and picnic area for public use and if you are lucky you may see a boat going through the lock chamber.
