The Mallala and Districts Historical Committee, established in 1968, quickly grew its collection, prompting the Adelaide Plains Council to purchase the heritage-listed Old Flour Mill in 1970 for use as a museum. Built in 1878, the mill remains the town's most prominent landmark. The museum houses original 1870s mill plans and interpretative displays that tell the story of early settlers, their struggles with isolation and poor transport, and the resilience that shaped the district. The southern gallery highlights community life, showcasing local government, business, and social activities, with photographs and memorabilia celebrating the families, sports, and service organisations that formed the backbone of the area.

The Old Mill also features an extensive display of the district's military and service history, spanning from the Boer War to modern peacekeeping missions, with a special focus on the RAAF No. 6 Service Flying Training School established at Mallala in 1941. Upstairs, furnished rooms recreate home life from the 1920s–1950s. Recent upgrades include the revitalised Margaret Tiller Gallery, a new "fire house" for the REO Speed-wagon fire engine, completed transport displays, and significant improvements to the agricultural collection. The museum's northern gallery and relocated Long Plains School room further enhance this engaging reflection of the district's rich heritage.
