A small inland town surrounding by farming land, Alford has a population in the town and nearby district of around 150 people.
Located 27 kilometres south of Port Broughton, 12 kilometres inland from Tickera, 20 kilometres north of Kadina, and 23 kilometres north-east of Wallaroo, Alford was first surveyed by the South Australian Government in 1882 and is named after Henry Alford, a pioneer and inaugural member of the South Australian Police.
Alford was once a thriving town supporting a number of businesses and organisations including the Alford Hotel, general store, churches, blacksmith, school and telephone exchange.
