From the hills to the coast, here are our South Aussie mums’ favourite Mother’s Day locations from all around the state.

May 8 is a day to celebrate all the hard-working, caring, inspiring and down-right fantastic mums out there. This Mother’s Day, we took to social media and asked South Aussie mums two questions: what was your favourite Mother’s Day experience, and where were you when it happened? From surprise motorbike rides in McLaren Vale to luxury spa treatments in Glenelg, here are our top 5 Mother’s Day locations, for mums, by mums.

5.) Glenelg

Family-friendly Glenelg is one of our most popular metropolitan beaches, known for its laid-back atmosphere, quality cafés, glamorous clothing boutiques and classy restaurants. Even better, it’s just a 20 minute drive from the city centre. Alternatively, bundle mum onto the tram and in minutes she’ll be shopping till she drops and sinking her teeth into her cuisine of choice.

Facebook fan Angela Hudoba reminisced about a particularly memorable Mother's Day at Glenelg, courtesy of her daughters.

“My wonderful daughters Lisa & Natasha bought me a spa package at Glenelg for Mother’s Day. I had a lovely massage to start with, then the beautician left me to relax in the spa,” she wrote.

“But as soon as I turned it on, water went splashing and squirting all over the room. I tried desperately to turn it off without prevail. Stark naked I ran [out of the] room screaming for help and the rest is history…”

4.) Adelaide Hills

Less than 20 minutes’ drive from Adelaide’s CBD, the Adelaide Hills are dotted with quaint towns and lush canopies. Stirling, Hahndorf, Bridgewater and Crafers are perfect spots for a long lunch with mum. You’ll find plenty of cafés and restaurants serving delicious local produce and fantastic wines.

Speaking of wine, you’ll find your fair share in the Adelaide Hills with over 60 cellar doors to explore. We think mum deserves a cheeky glass or two, don’t you?

Facebook fan Tanya Stevens was particularly chuffed after being whisked away on a surprise drive through the Adelaide Hills.

“My surprise was a trip through the Adelaide Hills. We stopped at an Agapantha farm – beautiful place. [We also] stopped for coffee and nibbles in some lovely spots through the Hills,” she wrote.

3.) Barossa

Unsurprisingly, our wine capital – the Barossa – was one of your favourite picks. With over 80 cellar doors, some of the best wine in the world and beautiful scenery, it’s the perfect place for a bit of Mother’s Day “me time”.

After a day of indulgence and exploration, mum can retire to a five-star retreat, opulent self-contained apartment, or quaint cabin.

There’s nothing like putting your feet up by the fire in winter or outdoors in the leafy shade during summer, spring and autumn. Due to its Mediterranean climate (warm summers and mild winters), the Barossa’s Cabernets and Shiraz’ are unbeatable. Eden Valley Rieslings and Chardonnays are some of the best in the State; sip a glass or two under the Valley’s towering gums or among rows of leafy grape vines.

Facebook fan Eleisha Dayman surprised her mum with a trip to the Barossa, arriving at her house unannounced, bundling her into the car and treating her to a day of luxury with the whole family.

“We spent Mother’s Day in the Barossa Valley: my mum, my siblings and our children. It was very special,” she wrote.

2.) McLaren Vale

McLaren Vale is one of South Australia’s gourmet hot spots and the perfect place to pamper mum this Mother’s Day.

Discover cellar doors where you can sip exceptional Fleurieu blends and enjoy a long lunch with mum. For dinner, you’ll find upmarket restaurants aplenty.

If mum’s feeling active, The Fleurieu Peninsula has some great trails for walking, cycling and horse riding. Walk or ride the Coast to Vines Trail stretching from the cliffs at Marino to the vines of McLaren Vale.

Facebook user Michelle Reynolds will never forget the Mother’s Day she spent on the back of a roaring Harley Davidson, speeding through stunning McLaren Vale.

“My lovely family surprised me with a Harley ride. What a great, pretty and exciting trip; thanks for the great mum’s day to remember,” she wrote.

1.) Mount Lofty

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden comes to life in autumn with blazing red, orange and yellow canopies as far as the eye can see. This Mother’s Day, take mum for a stroll through South Australia’s autumnal wonderland; pack a picnic lunch, slip on some walking shoes and don’t forget the camera.

The Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is huge, with 97 hectares of leafy, lush flora to explore at your leisure. Meander along a multitude of paths, criss-crossing through some of South Australia’s most beautiful and diverse plant-life.

Facebook fan Maggie Ball spent an idyllic Mother’s Day at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden on a mystery picnic organised by her family.

“I will never forget feeling totally loved and surprised, being taken on a mystery picnic by my wonderful husband, Simon Ball and our sons, Kieran Ball and Liam Ball,” wrote Maggie.

“Autumn colours are my favourite and Mt Lofty Botanic Garden is a picture at this time of year. The picnic basket was brim full [with] all of my favourite treats. Being with the three people I love most in the world was the best Mother’s Day of all.”
