South African born chef, Duncan Welgemoed, spent 11 years working in England before forging his reputation at the renowned Bistro Dom.

Africola is one of Adelaide city’s hottest dining venues. In chef Duncan Welgemoed’s words “It’s a contemporary African restaurant ‘slash’ bar".

“Cooking is done on the fire with a big emphasis on vegetables, seafood and rotisserie meats. It’s loud, brash and boozy - just as it should be.”

Africola is eclectic, exciting and the food just downright delicious. The peri-peri chicken with hearts and livers is sensational as are the house-made boerewors. For the more adventurous, the cows head shaka is bound to capture your attention.

There is a great wine list here too with some of the hottest producers from Australia and further afield available, all rating high on the drinkability meter.

Bespoke produce

As far as produce goes, Duncan says "the produce we use at Africola is bespoke".

"Working with small farmers and growers with all animals being bred and raised exclusively for use by me so I know the quality of their life and the quality of the final product is spot on.

“One person who I love working with and has great produce is Richard Gunner at Feast Fine Foods. He has several outlets around Adelaide, the Central Markets, Norwood, Unley and Victor Harbor. The Coorong Angus Beef is excellent”.

As for where to dine in Adelaide, Duncan likes Magill Estate for "its setting, simplicity and beautifully executed cooking".

"It’s perfect for Sunday lunch; some wagyu and a bottle of Grange is pretty hard to beat. I also like Orana (awarded 2017 Restaurant of the Year by Gourmet Traveller), fantastic food and Jock (Zonfrillo) just keeps on pushing the boundaries. Friday lunch is the time to go and Golden Boy is awesome."

"For little "hole-in-the-wall" joints Parwana Afghan Kitchen is $#%@ing awesome and Saigon Gate on Prospect Road is always a favourite for Vietnamese and their combination beef pho has revived me on numerous occasions."

Africola is located at 4 East Terrace, Adelaide.
