As the winter chill creeps in, Adelaide stirs with stories to tell and sights to see.

Adelaide’s winter months aren’t for escaping — they’re for warming up to. June, July and August is the season when locals readily top up your glass of red by the fire and serve you warm gnocchi with a side of stories at the markets. When the days shorten and the chill sets in, the city feels like your favourite jumper — cosy, inviting and full of simple pleasures. We’ve rounded up the best things to do in Adelaide in winter — little moments that make the season feel anything but cold.

Waterfall Hiking

Heavy rain transforms our waterfalls, sending them cascading through gullies and rocky gorges — as if nature's letting out a breath of fresh air. As the temperatures drop, you pull on a rain jacket, lace up your boots and chase the rush of water in full flow. Hear it roar and let the sound drown out everything else — it’s one of the simple pleasures of Adelaide in winter. Start close by at Waterfall Gully where the waterfall drops a breathtaking 20 metres, before exploring the less-travelled paths of Mark Oliphant Conservation Park. These waterfalls are surprisingly close, within a short 30-minute drive from the city. There are plenty more waterfall trails worth exploring too, so we’ve made a guide to help you discover them

Go to the theatre

In Adelaide, we’re closely connected — to each other, to stories and to the arts. That’s why theatre feels so at home here. There’s something timeless about settling into a velvet seat, the hush before the lights dim and a full house swept up in a story. At Her Majesty’s Theatre, you feel like you’re stepping into a piece of living history. Escape the cold and take in a world-class musical, a touring ballet or a drama. Over at the Adelaide Festival Centre, catch a main-stage show or a bold new work — or head to the Dunstan Playhouse for contemporary performances with a local edge.

Red wine by a roaring fire

There’s something undeniably comforting about holding a glass of red wine by a roaring fire. Outside, cars splash through puddles and the city buzzes with the energy of an Adelaide winter. Inside, you’ll find a welcome warmth. After a show at Her Majesty’s Theatre, you slip into the cosy warmth of The Hotel Metropolitan and unwind with a glass of shiraz, its deep red catching the firelight like stained glass. You can do the same at the British Hotel — but with the addition of their famed Guinness pie — or at one of the many pubs dotting Adelaide CBD. Beyond the city, you won’t find a better way to enjoy a fire than at one of South Australia’s cellar doors. Sip wine as rain settles over postcard-perfect vineyards — from the crackle of the fire at Skillogalee in the Clare Valley, to the misty hills at Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard or a glass by the hearth at Hentley Farm.

Adelaide Central Market tour

In the midst of winter, the Adelaide Central Market feels like a season of its own — cosy, colourful and bustling with life. It’s not just shelter from the weather that draws you in, but lines of stallholders calling out greetings, sharing samples and learning your name. The air smells of fresh coffee and paella, while colourful towers of vibrant citrus fruits and earthy root vegetables spill from crates. There’s a kind of joy in seeing food this fresh. Its quality speaks for itself as a guided tour takes you behind the scenes, winding through seafood counters and spice stalls. Locals gather around steaming bowls of laksa, and queues spill out of the beloved Lucia’s — an institution, home to Italian food served with the warmth of South Australian hospitality. Here, Adelaide in winter feels anything but cold.

Art galleries and museums

Adelaide takes art seriously — we see it as another way to connect with people. When winter settles in, art warms the soul — something to gather around, to feel moved by and to share with others. Step inside the galleries and museums that line our cultural boulevard, North Terrace. At the Art Gallery of South Australia, you might find yourself lingering longer, absorbing works of art spanning Australia, Europe, North America and Asia. A few steps away, the South Australian Museum draws you into ancient stories — fossils and artifacts grounding you in time. MOD. breaks the mould entirely, with futuristic installations that glow, move and ask questions long after you’ve left. For the month of August, SALA sends art beyond gallery walls — spilling across laneways, cafes, cellar doors and shopfronts, turning the whole city into one big exhibition.

Winter feasts

As the days grow shorter, Adelaide’s restaurants invite you to linger — over shared plates, second bottles and stories that stretch late into the night. Menus shift with the season, shaped by local produce and the kind of care you can taste. In the heart of the city, mood lighting at Press* Food & Wine hugs you hello. Dine on locally sourced ingredients cooked with love — like slow-roasted meats and winter vegetables, charred just right. Just 25 minutes from the city, at Ondeen in the Adelaide Hills, the idea of local goes even deeper, with much of the produce grown in their own garden. Winter brings earthy root vegetables, vibrant herbs and hardy greens, served in dishes that feel grounded and generous. The staff speak about food with the kind of quiet pride that comes from growing it themselves — and from knowing exactly what makes a South Australian winter taste so good. Want more inspiration? We’ve rounded up some of the best restaurants to visit if you’re looking for things to do in Adelaide in winter.

Adelaide's bars and laneways

After filling up on slow-cooked meats and garden-picked greens, drift into Adelaide’s laneways, where the night stretches on. The East End glows after dark, Peel Street buzzes with life and Leigh Street’s warmth invites you in for one more drink. Seek out the unmarked doors and descend the tucked-away stairs to Maybe Mae — where leather booths and timeless cocktails await — or find a cosy corner at Clever Little Tailor. At Leigh Street Luggage, bottles line the wall like art in a stylishly narrow space. Across the city, LOC Bottle Bar serves natural wines and friendly chatter. Bartenders here remember your name and, somehow, always know just the drop you’re in the mood for. If you're thirsty for more, we've rounded up some of Adelaide’s best bars.

Illuminate Adelaide (2-20 July 2025)

An Adelaide winter is welcomed with the glow of Illuminate Adelaide. When the chill settles in, you pull on a thick coat, wrap a scarf around your neck and step into streets pulsing with colour and sound. Turn a corner and you might find yourself face to face with a glowing herd of horses or standing beneath colourful lights cascading down iconic landmarks. In Adelaide Botanic Garden, laser light and sound bend and blur nature. And above the river, hundreds of drones rise in unison, telling stories in the sky — both ancient and powerful. A mix of free and ticketed events draw crowds each winter. Whether you’re hand in hand with your child, sipping hot chocolates with friends, or linking arms with your significant other, it’s a city-wide spectacle that coaxes you out of hibernation.

Beyond the city, winter has even more to give.

When you’re ready to wander further, South Australia’s top winter activities are just a drive away.
