Celebrate the best of South Australia and Adelaide in winter

Winter in South Australia isn’t something to wait out - it’s something to lean into. No, it doesn’t snow here, but winter still knows how to make an entrance. Mornings are brisk and clear. Evenings invite you to linger a little longer. From June to August, Adelaide hovers between 8 and 16 degrees Celsius - cool enough for coats and just right for wandering through Adelaide Central Market with hands wrapped around a hot chocolate.

Further inland, the Flinders Ranges drop colder still, but the night skies reward you for it  - peppered with stars and the clarity only winter brings. Along the coast, the ocean stays busy with giant cuttlefish swirling and whales breaching. On Kangaroo Island, winter feels wilder, with koalas and sea lions never far away. In the Barossa, Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills, cellar doors throw open their arms — fires lit and winemakers ready to pour.

This is your way into winter: cosy stays with deep baths and stacked firewood. Slow-cooked flavours worth travelling for. Wine weekends and festivals made for staying up a little later. As the nights grow longer, so too do the reasons to head out into them.

Things to do in Winter in South Australia

WINTER OUTINGS

The sun might clock off early, but we don't. Illuminate Adelaide turns the city into a glowing canvas of light and sound, while gallery doors stay propped open after dark. Along the Murray River, astronomy sessions make the most of winter’s clear, ink-dark skies - where stars sharpen overhead. In the Adelaide Hills, winter tours head into the forest after rain; in Coober Pedy, the season unfolds on the diggings — fingers in the dirt, eyes catching the shimmer of opal. On Kangaroo Island, wildlife tours bring sea lions, koalas and kangaroos into focus. Along the Fleurieu Peninsula, locals swap whale sightings between mouthfuls of fish and chips at the Winter Whale Fest.

It’s the season of rich reds and later bedtimes. These are the outings that make winter feel like the best excuse to get out of the house.

WINTER CREATURES

When the temperature drops, South Australia’s wild side gets a little easier to spot. On the Eyre Peninsula, wetsuits zip up and goggles go on as giant cuttlefish drift in with the cold, flashing and swirling through the shallows off Whyalla. Along the cliffs of the Fleurieu Peninsula, whale watchers wrap both hands around a hot coffee and wait for the next breach. In the paddocks, shaggy Highland cows loom through the morning mist, their long fringes beaded with dew.  Down south, the forest floor gets busy -  mushrooms push through damp soil and locals fill baskets by torchlight. When night falls, the stars come out clearer and closer, best seen from a quiet pod in the Coorong or the deep dark of Arkaroola

WINTER STAYS

South Australia’s winter stays don’t just keep the cold out — they make something of it. Steam rises off an outdoor bath while sheep graze in the paddock beyond. Inside, the fire is already going. You pull on thick socks for a trip to the log pile, then curl up in a robe to read while the kettle boils again. These cosy winter accommodations are built for deep rest and the feeling of being looked after.

Winter Dining in South Australia

WINTER FLAVOURS

Winter sharpens the appetite, and in South Australia, the food rises to meet it. Menus shift with the season: from meats that fall apart to root vegetables that have had time to sweeten in the soil. Rain feeds the vines and fills the pastures - and our chefs know how to turn it all into something worth talking about. In our wine regions, cellar doors glow a little warmer and events like Winter Reds and other fireside gatherings give you every excuse to make a weekend of it. Beyond the glass, winter flavours stretch right across the state — from cooking classes in the city to seafood experiences on the Fleurieu Peninsula and local produce-led events like Gutsy on Kangaroo Island. It’s a good time to book a table somewhere you’ve never been or settle into an old favourite near a roaring fire.

Winter Getaways in Adelaide

Adelaide wears winter well — scarf wrapped close, cheeks pink, one hand around something warm and the other reaching for the next good thing. By day, ovens stir behind market stalls as sourdough is sliced and pastries vanish before you reach the next shop. Just 20 minutes from the city, the road curls into the Adelaide Hills. Warm up as you climb Mount Lofty to get the blood moving, before settling into a cellar door with something red, earthy and perfectly timed.

By night, Festival Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre and venues across town keep long winter evenings busy with shows, concerts and comedy. Wine bars glow behind fogged glass, bottles stacked high and small plates circling the table between pours. Winter festivals add their pulse too, from streets to the hills. Back on your doorstep, cheeks flushed and the scent of woodsmoke clinging to your coat — Adelaide gave you more than you expected.
